Group Build a Bike: Design & Build

Group Build A Bike Lessons for Kids teaches youth how bicycle systems work together through hands-on diagnosis, tuning and selected assembly work. An instructor guides learners as they investigate a problem, choose an approach and check their work.

The lesson helps participants move beyond basic care to investigate shifting and braking, understand how components fit and work together, and practice selected assembly tasks. Projects develop over several sessions as your skills grow.

Join Kids’ Group Build A Bike Lessons

With Kids’ Group “Build A Bike” Lessons, projects for building the bike develop over time. A complete bicycle build is not promised in a single session, and every student does not need to work on the same repair. Activities depend on the bicycles, parts and tools available and on each learner’s readiness. Classes teach repair skills; they do not include a guaranteed completed repair, finished bicycle or bike purchase.

Class Overview: What Students Will Learn

  • Diagnose step by step: describe the symptom, inspect the relevant components, test a likely cause and check the result.
  • Shifting and brakes: explore derailleur adjustments, cable inspection and replacement, and tuning for reliable operation.
  • Wheels and wear: learn about wheel truing, spoke tension and signs that a component needs attention.
  • Bike engineering: investigate mechanical advantage, gear ratios and how drivetrain choices change the way a bicycle rides.
  • Assembly and installation: practice selected component work, which may include chains, cable systems, headsets or bottom brackets, as the project and student readiness allow.
  • Plan a build: consider parts compatibility, tools, work sequence and the checks needed to bring separate components together.
  • Inspect and test: check alignment and function with the instructor before a repaired or assembled bicycle is ridden.
